Hell's Gate - entrance to Macquarie Harbour - named in convict times. At
least two times
the size of Sydney Harbour. The top two metres is said to be fresh water,
mostly
coming from the Gordon River. The lighthouse on the left is on a small
island and 100 or so years ago the lighthouse was manned. The keeper had
a
house on the island. His children used to row across to the beach behind
the island
then travel the 10km or so to Strahan each day to go to school.
